Shagerd Ivan (east side)

The student’s porch is one of the important components of Isfahan Jame Mosque. This porch is located on the eastern side of the mosque and is also known as “Safeh Saghshashan”.

This porch is in front of the Ostad’s porch It is located on the west side of the mosque. The dimensions of this porch are about 12 meters in length and width and 20.19 meters in height. The exterior of this porch is decorated with Seljuk brick decorations. Over time, this porch underwent various changes, and it cannot be ruled out that the Seljuk style of decoration can be clearly seen in mosques, especially in the 6th century AH. The interior of this porch has also undergone many changes due to the different rulers and changes made by various benefactors, rulers and sultans. Among these changes, we can mention the addition of marble stones, numerous inscriptions, stucco and various mosaics that were added to the building during this period. In the central part of the eastern wall of this porch, there is an inscription that belongs to Shah Sultan Hossein Safavi and was written by the famous scribe of that era, “Mohammed Saleh”. The interior inscription of the porch, which is related to the era of Shah Suleiman the Safavid, is engraved with white thulth script on the background of azure clay tiles and was designed by the artist “Mohsen Emami”. This inscription refers to the virtues of the mosque and religious customs.

In the “Excavation in the East Porch” section, the floor of the East Porch was excavated by experts and nine columns were discovered in this place. These columns are six cylindrical ones with a diameter of 92 cm and three external columns with a diameter of 105 cm. Bricks are also placed between these columns, which are different from the bricks of the Abbasid period. These three-part columns were built on the well, and probably before the construction of the porch, there was a well in this place, on which the columns were installed to create a strong structure.

The Shahneshein of Ivan the student is decorated with tiling, thulth lines and brick muqrans, and it has remained in its original form. In this section, verse 18 and a part of verse 19 of Surah Al-Imran are written using Kufic lines. The altar of the disciple’s porch is completely made of marble and is located on the south wall. Various inscriptions and plaques are carved around the altar. Also, inscriptions and salutations are written on small tiles around the altar, although only six tablets of these inscriptions have survived.
